Status of completed inquiries
Overview
As of 11 June 2012, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women had completed one inquiry under article 8 of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, which concerned the abduction, rape and murder of women in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. The Committee found that Mexico’s failure to protect women effectively against widespread abduction, rape and murder constituted a violation of numerous provisions of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women and General Recommendation No. 19.
Five inquiries are currently underway or under consideration.
